Carrying a laptop with you when are you going to travel needs lots of care and security for you. There are two reasons to be careful when traveling with a laptop. One is to make sure that the laptop is not damaged, lost, or stolen while you’re traveling. The second is to make sure that the information (data) on the laptop remains safe and secure.
How to avoid it getting smashed up or stolen? Here are a few ideas to keep your computer and your data safe while traveling with a laptop.
- Before starting your journey, be sure to check with the State Department’s website for any travel alerts or warnings concerning Europe and the specific countries you plan to visit.
- Keep it with you at all times. It goes with you on the flight as carry-on baggage. Do not store it in the overhead storage area; it could get knocked around by someone else. Absolutely do not put your laptop in with your other baggage. Baggage handlers aren’t expecting expensive electronics to be in the stored baggage areas and you can’t expect it to be treated as a fragile object.
- Apple, Google & Microsoft have a “find my device” feature for tracking your gear and remotely erasing it if it gets stolen, but be sure to turn on the setting before you go.
- For safety against identity theft and other woes, delete any unneeded personal documents from the computer or tablet and protect it with a passcode. Make sure you are logged out of social media accounts and any sites that keep your credit card on file.
- Bring an Ethernet (Cat5) cable with you on your trip, in case there is no wireless connection available and you have to hook up to that little box next to the phone that you’ll find in most hotel rooms.
- You must have a password on your laptop to help slow down the security theft.
- As separately, Apply file passwords when available on confidential files.
- Never pass laptop through the airport X-ray conveyor belt until it’s your turn to walk through the metal detector. That way you’ll be able to pick it up promptly when it comes out the other end and prevent anyone else from walking away with it.
Sitting for a long at a desk or computer terminal can cause muscular pain or tension. But, by taking a five or ten-minute break to do a series of stretches, your whole body can feel better. It’s also helpful to learn to stretch spontaneously, throughout the day, stretching any particular area of the body that feels tense for a minute or two. Always try to break your attention away from the laptop every twenty to thirty minutes. Do some other task, talk to your friend or coworker – five minutes is more than long enough. Look out the window and enjoy the scenery. Or even close your eyes for a few minutes. This helps prevent your mind to get a new feeling and remain active.
